{"id":20206,"date":"2012-11-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.hdke.hu\/gyorgy-solti-centenary-year\/"},"modified":"2012-11-03T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-02T23:00:00","slug":"gyorgy-solti-centenary-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hdke.hu\/en\/gyorgy-solti-centenary-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Gy\u00f6rgy Solti Centenary Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Hungarian State Opera will commemorate the centenary of birth of the legendary Hungarian conductor, by a public panel discussion, film screening and by performing the Marriage of Figaro on <strong>October 26, 2012<\/strong>.&nbsp; This has been the only opera that Solti has conducted \u2013 and only at one occasion \u2013 at the Hungarian State Opera.<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Gy\u00f6rgy Solti, one of the outstanding conductors and leading personalities of the music scene of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century was born in Budapest on October 21 1912. He studied piano and music composition at the Music Academy from 1927 until 1931, tutored by such artists as B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, Ern\u0151 Dohn\u00e1nyi and Zolt\u00e1n Kod\u00e1ly. Already before WWII, because of his Jewish origin, he had to flee Hungary and took refuge in Switzerland, spending the rest of his life away from his home country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">\u201cI have been lucky to grow up in Hungary,\u201d he has written in his Memoirs \u201cin a country that lives in music, breaths music, and passionately believes in the power of music, as the celebration of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">A memorial plaque honors him on the house in Budapest, where he was born. He died in south France in 1997 and according to his will he was laid to rest in the Farkasr\u00e9t cemetery in Budapest, beside the grave of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k.
