The Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest cordially invites you to the opening ceremony of
\nthe temporary exhibition
\nDesired Worlds,<\/strong>
\nJewish Middle-Class Worlds in Gy\u0151r between 1867 and 1944<\/p>\n

\n

Industrial modernization played an important role in the development of Gy\u0151r\u2019s urban
\nself-image in the last third of the 19th century. It influenced greatly the self-identity of
\nthe Gy\u0151r middle class Jewry as well. Their belonging to the civil society was expressed through
\nvarious symbolic cultural phenomena. This exhibition recalls a bourgeois Jewish lifestyle
\nin Gy\u0151r which was ended abruptly by the Shoah, a change that caused irreversible
\ntransformation in the city.<\/p>\n
