The documentary focuses on the fate of selected individuals who survived the Holocaust because they managed to escape abroad. Central to the film is the question of collective memory of what was once the largest Jewish community in Burgenland: How do the descendants of the former Jewish residents remember Lackenbach? And how do today’s residents of Lackenbach recall the former Jewish community?

The film features voices from members of the Jewish community whose families originated from Lackenbach, lived there, and were expelled from the town. One such individual is David Joseph. The mother of this future British Crown Advocate fled from Lackenbach to London via Vienna on a Kindertransport. It was only much later in life that Joseph began to question his family’s history. The starting point was a photo of his family in Lackenbach, none of whom he could recognize. Gradually, this part of his family history resurfaced.

Dan Saada-Guttmann, who now lives with his family in France, contributed to the development of this documentary with his book on the Austro-Hungarian roots of his family, inspiring Norbert Blecha to create this film about the Jewish community of Lackenbach.

Location
Holocaust Museum, 1094 Budapest, 39.
