Imagine the Nazi- era in Kaposvár, a city in the southwestern part of Hungary. A boy, around 7-8 years old, is in love with a little Jewish girl. Eventually, during one of the deportations, she and her family is forced to leave her house, leaving nothing behind. The boy runs to their house and the only thing he finds is a completely empty envelope, with no adress on it, depicting the synagogue of Jerusalem and two trees.
Fast forward to today, when an 80 years old man is entering the Holocaust Memorial Center, carrying this envelope in his hands. It’s the same boy, only older, and he has kept it intact all these years. A reminder of the violently disrupted pure love of two kids during the Holocaust. Now, thanks to his kind donation, this envelope is a part of the Holocaust Memorial Center’s collection, which holds various kinds of archival materials and objects, documentations of the history of exclusion, persecution, forced military labour service and civilian forced labour as well as deportation.
The contribution of the survivors, visitors and supporters through the years is very important in enriching our collection. So if you are a Holocaust survivor, the relative of a Holocaust survivor or someone related in any way to these events and you want to share your story and experience, the Holocaust Memorial Center invites you to submit any document, photograph, memoir or object from this period of time you may have.
In that way you ensure it’s preservation for the future generations, and you contribute to the work of researchers, teachers, students and persons or visitors interested in the subject.
Every little object, document, photograph has a story to tell. A story that needs to be heard.
