“The Holocaust is a source of pain for the entire Hungarian nation; it caused immeasurable losses in both human lives and spiritual values. The HOUSE OF REMEMBRANCE researches and processes the modern-day persecution of Hungarian Jewry, citizens declared Jewish based on contemporary racial acts, the path that led to it, the impact of the catastrophe, the consequences of the loss that has not yet been overcome, and the causes and experiences of the violent, tragic rupture of Hungarian historical traditions.

The institution considers commemorating the tragedy and promoting reconciliation to be a matter of national importance. Its very existence and all its activities are an expression of the reverence, moral integrity, and dignity of the Hungarian nation, the state, and Hungarian society, in honor of all the victims of the Holocaust—our compatriots who were unjustly persecuted and murdered—as well as the Righteous Among the Nations and all selfless rescuers.

The memorial site in Budapest is a place of collective mourning and solidarity with the victims. It serves as an important location, methodological focal point, and catalyst for the nation’s culture of remembrance. Through its mission statement, it affirms the importance of respecting human rights and the paramount significance of protecting human life; through its scholarly examination and realistic portrayal of the past, it conveys a sense of responsibility for the future.

In presenting this tragedy that claimed the lives of millions, it must rectify a major historical oversight by putting an end to the historical ignorance caused by decades of culpable silence. For it to gain social acceptance, it is essential that it operates with high moral standards, credibility, and commitment, while respecting religious values and reverence, and with the utmost openness."
