The Public Foundation for the Holocaust Documentation Center and Memorial Collection, established by the Hungarian government in 2002, is the legal successor to the Hungarian Auschwitz Foundation, which was founded in 1990 as a civil initiative; it is an organization that continues and builds upon the latter’s more than ten years of professional work. The public foundation’s mission is to research, present, and educate about the history of the Holocaust. Located at 39 Páva Street in Budapest, the institution is the first state-funded Holocaust center in East-Central Europe. It is funded by the government and carries out its wide-ranging tasks through collaboration with domestic and foreign institutions, as well as with the support of private individuals.
