Snapshots of the forced labor service

The history of the Hungarian forced labor service contains a series of events closely connected to the Holocaust in multiple ways. This unarmed labor service existed for five lengthy years (1940-45) and took place at many different locations in varying circumstances of the Second World War, which is why this topic includes many different experiences. The studies published in the new book of András Lénárt and István Pál Ádám are attempts of contextualization. These independent yet interconnected studies examine reoccurring themes of the forced labor service’s history within a broader interpretative framework such as solidarity, the behavior of guards and their commanders, and the system of conscription. Additionally, two chapters deal with the photographic sources depicting the labor service. Finally, a separate text discusses the events of 1944, when forced labor service could even serve as an escape route from deportations to the death camps.
