The Holocaust Musem cordially invites you to the opening ceremony of its new temporary exhibition entitled
Men of the Match – Jews and Football Between the Two World Wars
Hungarian football came into being at the turn of the century in the bourgeois world of Budapest, with a significant contribution of the Jewish middle class among its players. A significant proportion of club managers, patrons and referees as well as a disproportionate number of football players were Jewish.
Our new temporary exhibition aims to give an insight into a frequently overlooked aspect of Hungarian football during this period, and to provide a story of four historic teams and the lives of 12 important players. Our exhibition commemorates the MTK Budapest Football Club (MTK), the Ferencvárosi Torna Club (FTC), the Újpest Football Club (UTE) and the Fencing and Athletics Club (VAC), three clubs that were active in the first half of the 20th century. We present the individual fates of ten outstanding Jewish football players and coaches who made immense contri-butions not only to national but also to international football, and two players who saved the lives of their compatri-ots during the Holocaust.
