International conference at
Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest
Perceptions of the past, historical canons, historical distortion and socialisation.
Theoretical approaches to history.
12-13 November 2025.
The past can only be grasped in its social and cultural contexts, woven into discourses and canons of memory, with different interpretations and perceptions from group to group. The group, its communicated cultural memory, determines it to the same extent as the personal experiences of a generation, which serve as filters of interpretation. These can be different perceptions, parallel readings, heteroglossia, while different intersubjectivities can be revealed behind them.
The aim of the conference is to explore the phenomenon of historical canons, perceptions of the past and the identity-shaping past as preserved in memory. The hermeneutic nature of this phenomenon also brings with it the possibility of distorting history. The latter will be given special attention in the context of the Holocaust. How are historical canons formed? What factors influence certain perceptions of the past? How do debates develop around different readings of the past? What are the characteristics of historical distortion.
Application deadline: 19 May 2025.
Conference venue: 39 Páva Street, 1094 Budapest, Hungary – Holocaust Memorial Center
