The Holocaust Memorial Centre cordially invites you to the international conference:
“Coming back – coming home?
The emigration dilemmas of Hungarian Jews, 1945-1949″
October 27, 2022
Thursday: 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM
In 1945, the Nazi concentration camps were liberated. The survivors had to decide what course to set their lives on. After the end of the war, the borders were redrawn again, therefore some of those deported from Hungary could return to other countries (Romania, Czechoslovakia). In the simultaneous and parallel process of democratisation and the communist takeover, the returning Jews had to face the loss of their loved ones and material possessions, and the untellable nature of their sufferings. The aim of the conference is to review the attitude of Hungarian society towards the returning Jews, and to examine what opportunities and support were available to help them make a new start.
The event will take place online on Zoom.
