The Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest cordially invites you to the opening ceremony of
the temporary exhibition
Desired Worlds,
Jewish Middle-Class Worlds in Győr between 1867 and 1944

Industrial modernization played an important role in the development of Győr’s urban
self-image in the last third of the 19th century. It influenced greatly the self-identity of
the Győr middle class Jewry as well. Their belonging to the civil society was expressed through
various symbolic cultural phenomena. This exhibition recalls a bourgeois Jewish lifestyle
in Győr which was ended abruptly by the Shoah, a change that caused irreversible
transformation in the city.

Programme:
Opening speech by dr. Andor Grósz,
Chairman of the Board of the Holocaust Memorial Center
The exhibition will be opened by Vince Szalay-Bobrovniczky,
Deputy State Secretary for Civil and Social Relations of the Prime Minister’s Office
Guided tour of the exhibition by dr. András Zima,
Director of the Holocaust Memorial Center; dr. Norbert Glässer, cultural anthropologist
