The review presents George Eisen’s monograph on the August 1941 mass murder in Kamianets‑Podilskyi, interpreted as a rehearsal for the Hungarian Holocaust. The book reconstructs the political, administrative and ideological background of the deportation of Jews expelled from Hungary as stateless persons. Eisen combines rigorous historical analysis with a personal family narrative while maintaining scholarly objectivity. The volume offers a detailed examination of Hungarian authorities’ independent responsibility and the step‑by‑step mechanics of the killings, from decision‑making to the concealment of evidence. Particular emphasis is placed on the methodology of the “Holocaust by bullets” and its moral implications. The review concludes that the book constitutes a foundational contribution to both Hungarian and transnational Holocaust studies.
