Prominent Jewish families played a role in bearing a greater share of the collectively shared burdens of the communitas judeorum and in representing the interests of the community. At the end of the 18th century, at county and city level, these included Moses Lackenbach, who died in 1814 as an imperial and royal patent merchant; Moses Löwenstein, who died in 1824 as a respected president; as well as Israel and Henrik Lackenbach, Philip Benzian, Rubin Blau, and Mózes Blau, the heads of the Scherz, Zappert, Pressburger, and Ritscher families.
